Quick Cuts • Blood is cathartic and passes quickly through the intestine; for bright red blood per rectum, upper sources of bleeding must be considered. • Tagged red blood cell scans are very sensitive, but do not provide precise anatomic localization of bleeding. c. Subtotal colectomy. (1) Performed if lower GI bleeding has not been localized before operative intervention. (2) High mortality and can be complicated by rebleeding if the source is not included.
