Case 8.16 Right Lower Quadrant Pain with Mass on Appendix
A 34-year-old patient has suspected appendicitis. On exploration, you find a mass at the tip of the appendix.
Q: What management is appropriate for the following findings?
Case Variation 8.16.1. A 1-cm diameter, yellow firm mass at the tip of the appendix ◆ ◆ This is most likely a small carcinoid tumor (Fig. 8-17). Biopsy is not necessary. If the tumor is at the tip of the appendix, less than 2 cm in diameter, and there is no evidence of spread to the cecum or nearby nodes, a routine appendectomy may be performed.
