culture. This involves taking responsibility to adhere to the ethical expectations of profes sional practice. Healthcare professionals have a social contract with the public as experts in their chosen eld of service. Being an expert requires a commitment to lifelong learning. In other words, being evidence-based is the job of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, therapists, and clinicians of every type. If you are competent in EBP, encourage and mentor others on their journeys. If you are not competent in EBP, develop your re ective practice and be curious, learn the seven-step EBP process, participate in EBP work, support an EBP culture, be an EBP champion, role model EBP, teach others, disseminate your good EBP work, and celebrate your EBP successes. EBP FAST FACTS • Evidence-based practice (EBP) and evidence-based decision making (EBDM) are effective and ef cient problem-solving approaches that use the best evidence to drive healthcare decisions and provide the foundation to meet the quadruple aim in healthcare. • In building and sustaining an EBP culture, it is rst important to assess organiza tional culture and readiness to assess strengths and areas needing improvement; track culture and readiness over time to determine impact of implementation strategies. • A critical mass of EBP mentors is necessary to build and sustain an EBP culture that sustains itself. • EBP models should be used to guide EBP implementation and sustainability. • Leaders who “walk the talk” and provide resources and support for EBP is essen tial in building a culture and environment that sustains EBP. • The 12-step strategy for implementing and sustaining EBP should be used to improve healthcare quality, safety, and patient outcomes.
