AAOS Comprehensive Orthopaedic Review 4: Print + Ebook (AAOS - American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
Preface
The fourth edition of AAOS Comprehensive Orthopaedic Review is a manifestation of the belief that a comprehen sive, well-written review textbook remains valuable to the AAOS membership. In the era of social media, online video platforms, and cloud-based textbooks, a physical companion for learning is welcome and needed. This edition encompasses the fundamental knowl edge of orthopaedic surgery, as well as a comprehensive review of the past 5 years of published literature and expanded coverage of topics that are becoming increas ingly relevant. With that in mind, 14 completely new chapters have been added: Preoperative Optimization and Perioperative Medical Comanagement; Health Care Disparities; Principles of Regenerative Medicine in Orthopaedics: Biologics, Biomaterials, and New Frontiers; Complications in Primary and Revision Shoulder Arthroplasty; Fracture Healing and the Biomechanics of Fracture Fixation; Sports Injuries of the Hand and Wrist; Imaging of the Hand and Wrist; Pediatric Hand and Wrist; Nerve Anatomy and Repair; Tumors of the Hand and Wrist; Disorders of the Upper Extremity; Bone, Fracture Healing, and Nonunions; Complex Foot and Ankle Deformities; and Orthobiologics in Sports Medicine. Several other chapters have been combined or eliminated to help with organization. Like the third edition, the fourth edition is com posed of 11 distinct sections, organized by subspe cialty. The content is consistently structured in an outline format, allowing for rapid recall of material and streamlined readability. Each chapter concludes with 10 to 12 bibliographic entries and Key Learning Points, which are designed to maximize recall of important information and highlight commonly tested information.
All of the chapters have been written by experts in each subject and rigorously reviewed. This text is a reflec tion of the heavy lifting and quality work of the section editors: Lisa Taitsman, MD, MPH, FAAOS; Nathanael D. Heckmann, MD; Gregory D. Schroeder, MD; Jason W. Savage, MD; Megan Conti Mica, MD, FAAOS; Luke Thomas Nicholson, MD; Chad A. Krueger, MD, FAAOS; Elizabeth B. Gausden, MD, MPH; Jaimo Ahn MD, PhD, FAAOS; John Elfar, MD, FAAOS; Matthew Saltzman, MD, FAAOS; Sara Edwards, MD, FAAOS; Julius A. Bishop, MD, FAAOS; Sean T. Campbell, MD; Brian Weatherford, MD, FAAOS; Jonathan Kaplan, MD, FAAOS; Kristofer J. Jones, MD, FAAOS; Vehniah Tjong, MD, FRCSC, FAAOS; Rachel Y. Goldstein, MD, MPH, FAAOS; Claire Shannon, MD; Kenneth R. Gundle, MD, FAAOS; and Cara A. Cipriano, MD, MSc, FAAOS. It is also important to extend thanks and appreciation to the chapter authors who volunteered their time and effort to this publication in the interest of education. It is my hope that students, residents, and fellows preparing for board examinations and other tests will find that this edition is a comprehensive review text that provides a user-friendly way to enhance their orthopae dic knowledge. In addition, the text presents all ortho paedic surgeons with concise, broad-based knowledge that they can use in their practices.
